Lead Organizer
EducateUS: SIECUS In Action is building a movement of voters laser-focused on advancing progressive sex education policy and implementation across the country. We believe that comprehensive public sex education can change the world.
The Role
Join our new and growing organization as our Lead Organizer! This is a brand-new role that the right candidate will help us co-create. The Lead Organizer will be responsible for many of our organizing activities, with a special focus on working with state and local partners to build the grasstops and grassroots power necessary to change U.S. public school sex education for good.
We seek someone who shares our mission to change the world through universal public school relationships and sexuality education. The Lead Organizer will have a passion for providing local organizers and advocates with the training, resources, and support to be more effective in their advocacy efforts. They will develop relationships with our partner organizations, individuals, and new prospective advocates to build an intersectional movement dedicated to fostering a new generation of Americans who are secure in their own bodily sovereignty, recognize and respect that sovereignty in everyone else regardless of race, place, creed, class or gender, know all the essential facts about how bodies work, and are fully prepared to flourish in loving relationship with themselves and others.
Lead organizer responsibilities and projects will include:
- Working with state and local advocates in our focus states to educate them on the benefits of effective organizing for sex education, support them in building organizing programs, help them identify the resources they need, and whenever possible, connect them with those resources
- Developing and piloting a new school board listening/tracking project, to help expand our state and local partners’ capacity to respond to local attacks on sex education before they take hold
- Developing a new EducateUS youth advisory board in order to foster a new generation of leaders organizing for sex education
- Attending and contributing to policy and organizing strategy meetings, as well as coalition meetings with field leaders across the country.
Required skills and experience:
- At least 3-5 years experience in community or political organizing for progressive social change
- At least 3 years volunteer management experience
- A personal connection to the fight for universal public school relationships and sexuality education
- Experience organizing in low-income communities and/or communities of color.
- Excellent advocacy, consensus-building, coalition-building, and leadership skills; demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with other staff and other organizations to successfully achieve campaign and program work plans and goals
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral; ability to analyze and communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences
- An independent thinker, self-motivated, problem solver, and team player with a commitment to excellence and maintaining positive working relationships
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments
- Effective time management skills, including attention to detail while maintaining the ability to prioritize, manage, and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner
- Computer and digital strategy proficiency is required
Other helpful skills and experience:
- Deep canvassing field experience
- Train the trainer experience
- Experience working with young organizers and advocates
- Political Campaign experience
- Public speaking experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft products, including Outlook and Sharepoint, as well as proficiency with Slack
- A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in a related field
Candidates must have a commitment to progressive change, great work ethic, and professionalism.
This position reports to: Executive Director
Location/Travel: Remote/Candidate should expect some travel as pandemic conditions allow.
Salary: $40K for a six month contract, with potential to become permanent full-time salaried position with benefits – and an expanded portfolio – if funding is secured
